Born in Uganda and based in Connecticut, Mayanja has been an exceptionally busy deep house artist for years; DJing, making records and running her own Bu-Mako label, which grew out of a party she used to throw in New York. Meanwhile, she’s also a full-time mom of two kids, and wife to another American deep house artist, Jus-Ed, the man behind Underground Quality. As she recently told the blog Keep It Deep, she’s happy with her current lot, but feels her artist profile is kept down by day-to-day constraints. It’s a situation she thinks is all too common for women like herself, and one that greatly influenced her new album, especially the title track.<\/p>\n

“Professionally I have felt in the last year as if I was walking in the shadows, always someone standing right in my light,” she says. “All women have had at one point to walk in the shadow of somebody, their mates, fathers, mothers, children, colleagues.”<\/p>\n

Woman Walking in the Shadows will be Mayanja’s second full-length after 2007’s Stream of Consciousness. A single for the title track is currently available on Bu-Mako, complete with remixes from Jus-Ed and Kai Alce. For a sneak peek of the album, check out her mix for Keep It Deep.<\/p>\n
