The music draws deep from the wellspring of early 70s Brazilian jazz and modal hard bossa while underlining the vital role of the arts in social and political struggle.<\/p>\n<p>In Nicola\u2019s own words: \u201cTerra Em Transe&#8217; is a dedication to visionary director Glauber Rocha and to all free thinkers willing to portray the conflicts, contradictions and lies of those in power around the world.\u201d An original composition co-written with Swedish saxophone virtuoso Magnus Lindgren, the song takes inspiration from Milton Nascimento\u2019s vocal harmonies and the sophistication of Tamba 4\u2019s samba-jazz. Recorded predominantly live with only voices and guitar overdubbed, it features Lindgren&#8217;s flute alongside Domenico Sanna&#8217;s piano, S\u00e3o Paulo-born percussionist Gabriel Prado on percussion and second voice, with Ameen Saleem on fender bass and Teppo M\u00e4kynen on drums.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Naquela Base&#8217; is a stunning reinvention of Jo\u00e3o Donato&#8217;s classic: pure modal hard bossa recorded entirely live in the studio. Inspired by the sound on fellow samba-jazz classics like Ten\u00f3rio Jr.&#8217;s \u201cEmbalo\u201d and Paulo Moura&#8217;s \u201cFibra\u201d, \u201cNaquela Base\u201d is carried beautifully by Teppo M\u00e4kynen&#8217;s masterful drumming, with solos from Gaetano Partipilo on alto saxophone and Pietro Lussu on piano, supported by Ameen Saleem on double bass and Abdissa Assefa on percussion.<\/p>\n<p>Having released music with Blue Note, Impulse! and Schema records, Nicola Conte&#8217;s relationship with Far Out Recordings has produced his acclaimed Umoja project, his five-part Viagem compilation series and most recently Viaggio, a compilation exploring Italy&#8217;s library music renaissance from 1970-79.
