Bembe – Bembeya Latin Strut 7″
Japan’s super-prolific Soul Garden take an Afro-Cuban diversion for their latest release with one of the country’s leading Afro-jazz troupes Bembe. The band – led by Yusuje Asano – have a reputation as a live act that is second to none but their releases aren’t quite as prolific as their touring schedule. Last spotted on Hiroko Otsuka’s Piece The Next mix last year, this is their first Soul Garden 45″ and it’s highly advisable you jump on it… “Bemeya Latin Strut” is a densely weaved jazz workout with elements at delicately balanced odds. “Dope Walk Slow Talk” is a much more sedate affair as the sax whips up a fire over a smouldering reggae beat. Dope indeed.
