Kevin Hedge (Blaze)
Since early childhood I’ve been a magic carpet woven from; notes, melodies and lyrics. Flying high, I have traveled from my bedroom to inspiring places across the globe!
To me music is like the spirit of GOD you can’t see it, you can’t touch it but you feel it touching you. I've learned music can be medicinal, able to soothe and console pain, while equally it can express happiness and joy, accurately.
I am not blessed with the ability to play a musical instrument, I am not blessed to sing notes in key. So what is the mystery of this conveyance that would allow an sentient being like myself, to enjoy a career in the creation and performance of music.
Over 35 years, I have been involved with writing, producing, performing intellectual ideas related to this art form. I often say"art" is an opinion and to be a successful artist you have to hope many others share your opinion about a subject or observation. But I still ask, where did I get this overwhelming passion for this art form? How am I with any musical creative ability? Honestly, maybe the musical ability I try to claim, may not be a special ability at all. I might be fooling myself LOL!!! No one in my family history ever displayed any musical talent or even an interest, outside of the sheer entertainment value.
The journey begins at 8 yrs old, while listening and experiencing the soul music of the seventies. It’s geniuses like Stevie Wonder, Maurice White, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers that graduated me from my basic childhood feelings and awareness, to learning how I interpret emotions. At age 10, my Mother brought me my first stereo record player 8 track tape and tuner system. I would spend hours lost in music, playing any and all the records found in my collection. I would play everything from The Supremes and all of Motown to Johnnie Mathis to Ray Charles to Coltrane to Roberta Flack and even Frank Sinatra plus, all in between. There was a lot of music in that house. My Aunt had a passion for bringing people together, she loved throwing parties and entertaining family and friends. She was a big hearted woman full of the spirit for life. I adored her, she was my hero and guardian angel. I learned respect for all people, at those parties, there would be gay, straight, white, black, even people from India, Asia and the West Indies. With different levels of intellect and from all walks of life, at these parties in her cramped apartment. I was always in control of the music. I would watch the reaction to the different records and began to learn how to take the energy up or down. I guess that was my first DJing gigs LOL ! What I really soaked up was the way music made people feel. James Brown was always for men heavy stomping and feeling black power ! While, Aretha Franklin always brought the women to the floor with her songs of empowerment.
As I grew to adolescence I would begin to develop my own musical taste. While in middle school, Maple Lyons in Newark NJ, I would pass a small mom & pop record shop, on the walk to and from school. Each day my mother would give me 2 dollars to buy lunch in school. However I would skip lunch and find my way into Buddy’s Hilltop Records on the way home from school. Each day I would buy a 7 inch record of whoever the latest hit maker was, I had heard on WBLS in New York City. In time I would have a healthy record collection of my own.
Parliament Funkadelic, and all the top funk bands along side Mayfields "Super Fly" and Issac Hayes's “Shaft” soundtrack albums, plus multitudes of hit 7’’ singles dominated my collection. But in 1978/79 the album that would change my life made its way in to my consciousness. I say consciousness because this record not only made my heart beat faster musically but it also raise my awareness socially. For years I had heard that black people were from Africa, when I saw the album cover art of Earth, Wind and Fire’s “ALL-N-ALL” it spoke to my soul in a different way. Seeing the Metaphysical Egyptian inspired African center paintings on the cover, made me feel proud. I sincerely discovered myself musically and intellectually. I FELT SOMETHING TOUCHING MY HEAD, HEART AND SOUL ! While listening to songs like “FANTASY”, “BE EVER WONDERFUL”, and even the interlude, "BRAZILIAN RHYME", I would slip into a musical hypnosis, then I could feel;
GOD WAS IN THE ROOM !!!
What I have come to know is music is the ability to communicate, FEEL! It’s an emotional transmission of feelings. We know feelings are at the base of the CREATOR’S reason for life. And we know a song or a performance can inspire the soul to live its fullest life. Most of us have experienced moments with music when it seems all within the experience are on ONE unifying vibration. I feel music as vibes and vibrations. It’s a frequency consistent with the rhythm of feelings emanating from my subconscious soul. I have experienced these moments many times whilst partying and playing in clubs. There is no greater experience/satisfaction than making a spiritual connection with a crowd of dancers, as a DJ.
I love sharing the gift of music but my truest obsession is to see people HAPPY!
My PRAYERS are all to add value to THE SOUL OF THE WORLD
Spreading love through the spiritual vibrations alive in music, I know the world is a better place.
I hope you can feel me !
