The Owl – Gangsta Funk
Hot on the heels of his sold-out debut 12″, Feel Good, comes a second serving of tried-and-tested re-edits from The Owl. As usual, he’s taken a “no frills” approach, preferring to make the most of his source material rather than presenting listeners with cheap new beats or effects trickery. Opener “Street Player” provides a slightly pitched down and expertly re-arranged take on a well-known Chicago disco classic (yep, as sampled by Kenny Dope all those years ago), while “Steps In The Dark” is an effortlessly sweet and groovy disco-soul groover. On the flip you’ll find “Never”, a subtle house shuffler that makes merry with an old school vocal and chunks of a Boz Scraggs favourite, and the sun-kissed, horn-heavy hip-hop-goes-jazz funk hustle of “Let Me Ride”.
