JPJZ Happy: Selected By Takahiro Matzz Matsuoka From Quasimode
The second compilation in the JPJZ series on BBQ is JPJZ Happy, compiled by Takahiro “Matzz” Matsuoka, percussionist from quasimode as well as the DJ behind the Spunky event. There is certainly plenty to put a smile on your face with a selection of tunes that represent a decent cross-section of the recent club jazz/soul/hip-hop/electronica crossover scene in Japan.
This is definitely an album for the summer, with the Mizell Brothers-style cool of You Are Music Pt 2 by 45, Gallery Connection’s Smile and the beautiful flute-led Summer House from native kicking off the set in perfect style.
There are also tracks that will keep fans of Latin grooves happy, in the form of Mano Arriba’s You Can Make It featuring Tasita D’Mour, Immigrant Bossa Band’s take on La Isla Bonita and Padmini from bohemianvoodoo.
The more electronic side of things is represented by Shota Hishiyama’s Children Of The Sun and Sparkle from XS, while the closing track, Shuya Okino’s Still In Love featuring Navasha Daya is a contemporary club classic that needs little introduction.
A warm, uplifting collection.
