Calm – The Art Of Remix 2X12″ – Hell Yeah

Aside from being a genuine master at making original blends of ambient, deep house, Balearic and acid, Calm (aka long-serving Japanese producer Fukagawa Kiyotaka) has long been one of electronic music’s most adventurous remixers. It’s that side of his work that’s explored on The Art of Remix, a compilation showcasing superb – and mostly overlooked – reworks from across his career. There are no duds amongst the eight tracks on show, just a sublime set of immersive, mood enhancing cuts that surprise at every turn. Highlights include a delightfully twinkling and enveloping ambient acid take on Aura Safari’s ‘Sur Mon Balconnet’, a trip-hop influenced cinematic shuffle through Michele Minnini’s ‘Vertigo’, a suitably dark, psychedelic and mind-mangling interpretation of Meitei Mahi’s ‘Dounika Kounika’, and a genuinely stunning, slow-burn revision of ‘Blue Surround’ by Balearic dons Seahawks.
