DINKY DI – Ride On Fire – 7″
Those with a deep knowledge of contemporary Japanese disco culture may well be aware of Dinky-Di, a self-styled “modern groove orchestra” helmed by musician/arranger Waq Takahashi. This fine 45 offers up a taste of their swirling, string-laden, groove-driven disco sound via two tidy re-edits of previous singles. On the A-side you’ll find “king of diggin'” DJ Muro at the controls, delivering a cracking rearrangement of ‘Ride on Fire’, a Salsoul Orchestra-esque affair that sounds like it was arranged and conducted by the great Tony Montana. Over on the flip Ryuhei The Man takes his scalpel to 2005 single ‘Gold Wave’, a delightfully swooping and over-the-top concoction full of warbling choral backing vocals, punchy horns, swooping strings and flash-fried funk guitars.
