Levon Vincent/DJ QU/Black Jazz Consortium – Earth Tones 2

As we establish ourselves firmly in our post-everything age, the boundaries between house, dubstep and techno have been well and truly blurred. Now what we seem to be getting is an open format of all sound production, with many influences converging together into one shimmering futuristic unit. “Earth Tones 2” sees Levon Vincent drop one of his most experimental jams yet with “Tyner”. Beginning like a broken Atari spitting out a tribal, half-step dub rhythm, we’re soon submerged by dissipating melodies, flanging atmospheres and flourishes of extremely stimulating, liquid keyboards; carrying on like some vintage soul jam dug out of the archives on Jupiter circa 2040. Vocals swirl and converge around a pulsing, radioactive core which must surely be harming us with its supernatural glow. We flip over for DJ Qu’s “Everybody’s Dark” – another haunting, futurist workout which seems to be from an inhuman source. A stripped down 4/4 pulse ricochets of a repeating rhythmic vocal line while eerie, baron atmospheres circle overhead giving the distinct impression of being deep within the engine room of a huge mothership out on the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Finally, Fred P tops off what must surely be the most futuristic twelve we’ve received so far this year with “Stay”. A club-friendly kick drum pattern holds down a catchy male vocal hook while droning strings and tones disturb and alienate the listener before flipping into some emotive and hyper soulful key changes. Three tracks of ultra sublime late night body music. Ignore at your peril!
