If you’re looking for something to brighten up your life during these harrowing times, we’d heartily recommend this excellent “45” from Nadine Sutherland and producer Dean Fraser. It sees them take on Sade classic ‘Smooth Operator’, re-imagining it as a baggy, languid, beach-ready fusion of reggae-soul sassiness and sax-laden smooth jazz. Sutherland is on fine form on the A-side vocal version, brilliantly delivering Sade’s lyrics over a head-nodding reggae rhythm, snaking saxophone lines, dreamy synth sounds and glistening jazz guitar solos. Fraser takes over on the flip and delivers an instrumental ‘Version’ mix that adds a touch of weight to the groove whilst showcasing more of the original’s glistening guitar solos and 1980s wine bar sax.
