We still mourn the late Phil Asher, so it’s great to see someone’s still carrying his torch. On this latest release from Neroli, label staple Nathan Haines offers up some formerly unreleased collboarations with the broken beat legend, which he happened to have hoarded prior to the latter’s death. The three tracks featured here are nighttime dreamscapes, only tinged with the idiosyncrasies of Asher’s production, but which nevertheless epitomise the late great’s sound. ‘Brother Of Mine’ especially does so, with carnival rhythms and blue, rudimentary Rhodes notes underlying its vocal backbone.
