You can picture the moment. Mid-drive, nothing of note, then something slips out of the radio with enough quiet insistence to make you pull over. That’s roughly how Lowestoft-based group Paprika Soul operate -not with any grand flourish but more a gradual sweep. The sound drifts between nu jazz and a lightly tropical strain of broken beat doesn’t settle for long. ‘Rio Dawn’ glows softly with sax lines curling at the edges, while ‘Bad, Bad Simba’ and ‘Jungle Strut’ tighten the groove without losing their ease. ‘Burn It Up’ nudges things forward. Then ‘Mellow Mellow’ arrives and the room seems to loosen, the track settling into a slow, enveloping warmth that lingers a little longer than expected.
