RYUSENKEI – Mellow Ryusenkei: Time Machine Love 2003-25 – Great Tracks Japan
While plenty of attention has recently been devoted to Japan’s hybrid ‘city pop’ sound of the mid 1980s (a localised fusion of synth-pop, jazz-funk, boogie and 80s soul), Ryusenkei have been exploring the style and its legacy since emerging at the dawn of the millennium. Mellow Ryusenkei: Time Machine Love 2003-25 is the band’s first ‘best of’ style retrospective. Featuring cuts picked by the band’s founder and leader Kunimondo Takagachi – a detail that explains the presence of cult faves and early obscurities as well as their Japanese hits – the collection largely mines the warmer, slower and more laidback end of Ryusenkei’s catalogue, blending classic city pop sounds and vocals with languid, jazz-funk-influenced grooves.
