Tranquility Bass – Broadcast Standard Issue No 1 12″ – Sound Metaphors
Tom Chasteen and Michael Kandel were among the earliest American producers to reimagine rave’s energy through slower and more cinematic forms. Based in Los Angeles, their work under the Exist Dance banner offered an unlikely bridge between West Coast psychedelia and the emerging language of trip-hop. This reissue returns to one of their most adventurous moments. It’s a turn away from trance towards something hazier and more devotional. ‘Cantamilla’ stretches a hypnotical groove over soft tablas and celestial pads while ‘Mya Yadana (Kin Kin)’ folds South Asian vocal fragments into a dub-like drift. On the flip, ‘Cantamilla (Broadcast Standard)’ reshapes the title cut with heavy throbbing before ‘They Came In Peace (Sea Of Tranquility)’ dissolves into pure ambient stillness. A slow, sun-bleached milestone of 90s downtempo.
